In February 2026 we created our own little piece of sporting history by having not one, but two, county handball champions!!
Annie Gaughan and Patrick Sweeney both won their respective under 11 single competitions, at the Glenfin GAA Handball Centre.
Annie won both her sets on her way to her gold medal. Some great serving, and returning the ball to win points from the opponents serve, ensured her great victory. Annie is proving a natural talented player.
Patrick had to come the hard route, having being drawn in the preliminary round at the county semi-finals held a week earlier. On the finals day Patrick lost his first set 11 – 7 but rallied strong in the second set to win 11 – 5. He showed great determination in his comeback. At 10 – 5 in the first set, he fought back to get the two extra points to bring him to seven. This grit and determination is what ultimately won the game for him.
To have two county champions, after only introducing handball to the school three years ago, is an amazing feat.
As a school we are so proud of both Annie and Patrick. It is a momentous occasion for both them and us as a school community.
We were all delighted to celebrate with them with some ice-cream when we got back to school!!
